UWTSD Student Wins Apprentice of the Year at G4C Wales Awards 2025
University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) student Curtis Richards has been named Apprentice of the Year at the prestigious G4C Wales Awards 2025, held at the Senedd in Cardiff.
Curtis, a part-time HND Quantity Surveying student, who is employed full-time by Tilbury Douglas, received the top accolade in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the future of the built environment sector. The ceremony celebrated the next generation of talent driving improvement, sustainability, and innovation across construction in Wales.
Curtis, is currently in the third year of his part-time programme at UWTSD, building on previous academic success including a BSc Geography and a MSc in International Planning and Development (RICS and RTPI accredited). Curtis said he chose UWTSD due to its strong reputation for industry-experienced lecturers and practical, career-focused learning.
He hopes to use the skills and knowledge gained from his studies to support his continued progression within Tilbury Douglas and build a successful long-term career in the construction industry.
“My qualification will allow me to progress professionally and maintain a successful career in the construction industry,” he said.
He credits the hands-on knowledge and real-world guidance of his academic team as a key factor in his development:
“The experience that the lecturers bring to the modules really enhances the course. Having teaching staff who have worked within the construction industry adds depth and relevance to our learning.”
Taking advantage of UWTSD’s Swansea Waterfront campus location, surrounded by amenities and connected walking routes to the bay and marina, Curtis balances his studies with his passion for travelling and supporting Swansea City AFC.
Curtis strongly recommends the University’s Quantity Surveying programmes to others:
“I’ve already been able to apply the theory directly into practice. The modules cover an excellent range of topics, from technology and construction knowledge to financial and legal aspects, giving a comprehensive understanding of the profession.”
The G4C Awards, aligned with Constructing Excellence Wales, recognise emerging leaders spearheading positive change in the construction industry.
Professor Rhian Jenkins, Academic Director: Architecture, Construction and the Environment, said: “Curtis’ success is a fantastic reflection of the talent, commitment, and professionalism we see across our Built Environment programmes. His award demonstrates how our strong industry partnerships and practical learning approach ensure students are equipped to make an immediate impact in the sector. We are incredibly proud of Curtis and delighted that his hard work has been recognised at a national level.”
