UWTSD students get the opportunity to work on a production of 'Dosbarth Miss Prydderch a Lleidr y Lleisiau.' (Miss Prydderch’s Class and the Voice Thief)
Students from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) have had the opportunity to work on ‘Dosbarth Miss Prydderch a Lleidr y Lleisiau’, the latest production by Theatr Cymru, Yr Egin and Arad Goch.
‘Dosbarth Miss Prydderch a Lleidr y Lleisiau,’ is a magical new musical that brings the adventures and characters of a beloved book series to the stage, with an original script by Dr Mererid Hopwood and lively music by Seiriol Davies.
As part of the production, current students from the University have had the opportunity to apply for a role to work on the show. Students were offered roles Shadowing the Director, as Production Department (Props) Assistant and Technology Support and Stage Crew.
This is an exciting opportunity for the successful individuals to gain practical experience as part of a professional technical team and stage crew on a professional Welsh language theatre production that will be touring venues across Wales. They will work alongside the creative and stage management team to ensure each performance is successful and safe.
Ashling Ryan, a Set Design and Production course student, has accepted the role of Production Department Assistant (Props), where she will help prepare, organise and look after props during the production. She said:
“I’m looking forward to working on this production, because throughout my time at UWTSD I’ve found a passion for working backstage, and this will allow me to experience that on a touring show for the first time. This will also give me valuable experience and contacts to help me within the industry.”
Nicole Evans has received the role of shadowing the director for the production. In her role, she will observe the work of a professional Director from the rehearsal process to the final performances, as well as how to approach a production on tour. She said:
“I am looking forward to gaining first-hand learning experience of directing and observing in a professional rehearsal space and am excited to apply my development as a student here at UWTSD into the industry. I can’t wait to see this magical show come to life!”
Alice Pearson has had the opportunity to assist as Technology Support and Stage Crew on the production, and is looking forward to expanding her network, learning more about the industry, and developing her skills in a live performance environment. She said:
“I’m particularly looking forward to working alongside practitioners like Cara Hood and Eädyth Crawford. As someone who is passionate about audio and visual storytelling, the opportunity to learn from a creative and technical team led by women in a field that is often dominated by men is especially meaningful. More than anything, I’m excited for a summer of collaborating with like-minded people and helping to bring this magical story to audiences across Wales.”
Nia Wyn Evans, Business Director at Arad Goch, added:
“We at Arad Goch are proud to offer a rare and valuable opportunity here for UWTSD students to attend rehearsals and gain first-hand insight into live production and an industry which we know is difficult to gain experience and work in.
“By taking the opportunity to gain experience on the ‘Dosbarth Miss Prydderch a Lleidr y Lleisiau tour and experience the co-production by three companies across Wales, they will gain invaluable experience that will support their first steps in the sector.”
Angharad Jones Leefe, Executive Director of Theatr Cymru, said:
“Supporting new talent in the theatre world is extremely important to us as Theatr Cymru. Therefore, we are delighted to offer opportunities for UWTSD students to be part of the production of Dosbarth Miss Prydderch a Lleidr y Lleisiau – and in Carmarthen, which is the company’s home. These opportunities will enable the students to learn directly from theatre experts and also build confidence, creativity and practical experience on a professional production.”
Llinos Jones, Yr Egin Engagement Manager, said:
“Yr Egin is an integral part of UWTSD’s Carmarthen campus – a creative and digital hub that nurtures talent and collaboration. We are delighted to be working with Theatr Cymru and Arad Goch on this project, and to be able to offer our students the opportunity to experience the thrill and excitement of live theatre.
I hope that the students will take advantage of this opportunity to learn, connect with professionals in the theatre world, and strengthen their aspirations to develop a career in the creative industry. I’d also like to give a special thank you to the creative staff working on the production for giving their time and expertise to develop and support the next generation of talent.
Dosbarth Miss Prydderch a Lleidr y Lleisiau will open at the Lyric Theatre, Carmarthen on 6 June, before touring across Wales. For more information on the tour, click here.
