Katy Hughes has graduated with a BA in Professional Practice from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), completing a powerful journey of personal and professional growth through work-based learning. Her final project critically evaluated the impact of the Early Literacy Intervention Programme (ELIP) on learners with outcomes B-D on the Dyslexia Screener, providing important insights into early support for children with literacy challenges.

Katy undertook the degree after it was offered through her workplace, recognising it as a unique opportunity to progress her career while contributing directly to the success of her organisation.

“I’ve always wanted to further my education, but past experiences had made me question whether it was the right path for me. This course changed that completely.”

One of the most valuable aspects of the course Katy  was the ability to claim credit for experiential learning, which allowed her to receive formal recognition for the skills and knowledge she had developed over her 16-year career.

“Building on my existing competencies helped me progress more quickly toward achieving my educational goals,” she explained.

Katy’s research focused on evaluating how the ELIP supports young learners identified as at risk of dyslexia. Her findings not only validated the work being done in her setting but also offered practical recommendations for improvement and wider application.

“Everything I studied was directly relevant to my job role, which not only validated the work I’ve been doing for the past 16 years but also gave me fresh insights and ideas for improvement.”

She described the course as transformational in building her confidence, reflective thinking, and leadership potential.

“It’s helped me take on more responsibility, explore new opportunities, and challenge the status quo in a constructive way. One of the most valuable new skills I’ve developed is reflection. It’s made a noticeable difference both professionally and personally, helping me manage situations more effectively—both as they arise and before they escalate—resulting in better outcomes for myself, the children, and the organisation.”

The course’s structure offered the flexibility needed to balance study with work and family commitments. Katy praised the support she received from her UWTSD tutors, especially whose guidance she described as absolutely amazing.

“Their encouragement and support made all the difference, and I couldn’t have asked for more from them.”

Lowri Harris, Programme Manager for the Professional Practice Framework (PPF):

“Katy’s journey exemplifies the transformative impact of the Professional Practice Framework. Her commitment to professional and personal development, combined with a reflective and research-led approach, highlights the power of work-based learning. We were incredibly proud to support Katy who is making a meaningful difference in her practice while advancing her career.”

Sarah Loxdale, Lead on Prior Learning under the PPF:

“Katy’s success is a perfect example of how recognising and valuing prior experiential learning can accelerate both confidence and academic achievement. By formally acknowledging the skills and knowledge she had already developed, Katy was able to focus her studies in a way that was deeply relevant and empowering. It’s inspiring to see how this approach can unlock potential and lead to lasting impact.”

For Katy:

“I would highly recommend this course to anyone considering it. It has been one of the most enjoyable, rewarding, and personally meaningful educational experiences I’ve had. It allows you to grow and develop in areas that truly matter to you.”
