Further information

  • 104-120 UCAS Tariff Points, Portfolio and Interview

The UCAS tariff score is applicable to you if you have recently studied a qualification that has a UCAS tariff equivalence. UCAS provides a tariff calculator for you to work out what your qualification is worth within the UCAS tariff.

We are interested in creative people who demonstrate a strong commitment to art and/or design and, therefore, we welcome applications from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.

We arrange interviews for all applicants to assess suitability for the chosen course. Your skills, achievements and life experience will be considered, as well as your portfolio of work.

    Alternative entry routes

If this course interests you, but you don’t have the entry requirements to join our bachelor’s degree you could consider:

This is a one-year course offering a comprehensive introduction to art and design, establishing a strong basis for your creative future. During the course, you will engage with a broad range of artistic disciplines and design areas, helping you to discover your passions and refine your skills.

     Admissions Advice and Support

We may make you a lower offer based on a range of factors, such as your background, experiences and individual circumstances. This is known as ‘Contextual Admissions’. For specific advice and support you can contact our enquiries team for more information about entry requirements.

    English language requirements

If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.0, with not less than 5.5 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests.

Visit the International Applications section of our website to find out more about our English Language Requirements and pre-sessional English Language Courses.

    Visa and funding requirements

If you are not from the UK and you do not already have residency here, you may need to apply for a visa.

For courses of more than six months’ duration you will require a Student visa.

International students who require a Student visa should apply for our full-time courses as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship.

For full information read our visa application and guides.

Please note students receiving US Federal Aid are only able to apply for in-person, on-campus programmes which will have no elements of online study.

  • Step One:

All applications, personal statements and references are read by the academic team and every candidate is invited to a thirty-minute interview. This interview can be either online via Zoom - we ask that a portfolio of work is sent in advance - or an in-person interview accompanied by a physical or digital portfolio.

    Step Two:

The interviews are designed to be conversations about the candidate’s work and ambitions within the industry. They are not opportunities to stress test responses or ask questions that only we know the answer to. We think of these occasions as first tutorials - designed to put people at their ease so they feel comfortable and confident talking about their achievements and future plans.

We rarely tell people on the day if they have a place as we prefer to meet as an academic team, to discuss the candidates we’ve seen.

On occasion we offer an unconditional place, if our entry qualifications have already been met or the candidate is a mature student. In general, we offer conditional places so that candidates act professionally and complete their current qualifications. We are selective, with a planned number of places each year. It’s important for our successful candidates to understand that we believe in their potential to flourish as designers, not just that they represent income.

Why choose this course?

01
We offer small class sizes allowing for excellent interaction and discussion, as well as unsurpassed support from the tutors – the kind which simply cannot be achieved in big lecture halls full of students.
02
We are one of the few universities across the UK to offer students the opportunity to focus on culture and civilizations rather than just history and archaeology.
03
Students have the opportunity to go on field trip modules where we explore wonders of the ancient world in person.

What you will learn

Our Ancient Civilisations programme invites students to explore the past by engaging deeply with ancient cultures and traditions. Students gain insights into the philosophies, military practices, and beliefs of ancient societies through archaeology, history, and culture. This approach equips students with a comprehensive understanding of how ancient peoples shaped their world and ours.

*Many of our Humanities courses use an A/B year system. This means Level 5 and Level 6 students are taught together, with modules either delivered every year or on a rotating (A/B) basis. The programme team reserves the right to adjust A/B year and semester delivery as needed.

In Year 1, students explore foundational topics in ancient civilisations, examining the Mediterranean and Near East regions, and everyday life in Athens and Rome. Core modules include studying the essentials of civilisation and the humanities, while optional courses allow students to explore hieroglyphs, mythology, and ancient philosophy. This year provides a broad introduction to the ancient world.

  • A degree in Ancient History involves a wide range of assessment methods. In addition to traditional gobbet work, essays and in class tests, you will be assessed through bibliographic exercises, presentations — oral and PowerPoint-based, at both individual and group level — creation of abstracts, reflective reports, in-house conference papers, article reviews, take-home exams, group wikis, creation of project plans and, of course, the dissertation.

This variety of assessment helps develop skills in presenting material in a clear, professional and lucid manner, whether orally or in writing.

This breadth of assessment type creates variety in the student experience, allowing you to explore the subject in different ways, and also embeds within the Ancient History programme the specific employability skills desired, indeed required, by employers today.

  • UWTSD prides itself on being a bilingual University and although there aren’t currently any modules available through the medium of Welsh on this course, in all cases students can submit written assessments through the medium of  Welsh.

Students may spend up to £300 per year on books and additional related materials.

    Optional Field trip:

The Faculty works to ensure that there are a range of fieldwork and field trip options available both locally and internationally. Thus students can opt to take either more expensive or less expensive placements. The Faculty subsidises these but the cost each year is dependent on airfare, location, and currency exchange rates. Below are the upper end of expected costs based on where students have currently done placements.

Fieldwork (depending on where the student decides to do fieldwork): c. £500 - £1,500
    Individual trips: c. £5 - £50

However, the programme of embedded employability offered by our degrees at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David ensures that our Ancient History graduates have the skills set and confidence to explore a wide variety of career paths.

Indeed, our graduating students have explored options from outdoors sports instructors to prison superintendents, from the Armed Forces to careers in the medical environment, with a good selection of entrepreneurial spirits applying what they have learnt to the creation of their own companies.

Taking all that they have gained from studying Ancient History with us and combining it with a dedicated Careers Service, Ancient History graduates from University of Wales Trinity Saint David are equipped to follow their passions wherever they may lead.
