Adeiladu Cynaliadwy (Llawn amser) (MSc)

Abertawe
1 Flwyddyn Llawn amser
Gradd anrhydedd 2:2

Mae’r diwydiant adeiladu yn rhan enfawr o’n byd ac yn darparu swyddi i filiynau o bobl, gyda dros 100 miliwn o bobl ledled y byd yn dibynnu arno am eu bywoliaeth. Ond, wrth i’r diwydiant adeiladu dinasoedd, ffyrdd a thai, mae hefyd yn defnyddio llawer o’n hadnoddau naturiol ac yn creu effaith amgylcheddol ddifrifol. Daw bron i hanner allyriadau carbon y byd o’r amgylchedd adeiledig, ac mae’r sector hwn yn defnyddio tua 50% o’r holl ddeunyddiau naturiol sy’n cael eu cloddio. Mae’r galw mawr hwn yn rhoi mwy o bwysau ar yr amgylchedd, gan ei gwneud yn hanfodol i’r diwydiant feddwl a gweithredu’n fwy cynaliadwy.

Mae’r cwrs Adeiladu Cynaliadwy yn PCYDDS yn rhoi’r offer sydd eu hangen ar fyfyrwyr i helpu i newid y ffordd rydym yn adeiladu, gan ganolbwyntio ar leihau’r effeithiau hyn. Mae’r cwrs yn archwilio ffyrdd o leihau allyriadau carbon drwy ddefnyddio arferion adeiladu cynaliadwy. Mae myfyrwyr yn dysgu am y strategaethau diweddaraf mewn rheoli gwastraff, gan archwilio sut y gallwn leihau faint o wastraff tirlenwi a gynhyrchir gan y gwaith adeiladu a dod o hyd i ffyrdd mwy ecogyfeillgar o drin deunyddiau.

Mae’r cwrs yn cynnwys ystod eang o sgiliau a gwybodaeth hanfodol sy’n mynd y tu hwnt i adeiladu strwythurau’n unig. Mae’n ymwneud â dysgu sut i ddefnyddio dulliau cynaliadwy sy’n diogelu adnoddau gwerthfawr fel dŵr ac yn lleihau gwastraff, gan sicrhau y gall adeiladu yn y dyfodol ddiwallu anghenion cymdeithas heb leihau adnoddau’r blaned.

Ar y cwrs hwn, mae myfyrwyr  yn cael eu haddysgu sut y gall adeiladu cynaliadwy wneud gwahaniaeth cadarnhaol. Byddan nhw’n edrych ar y cyd-destun ehangach, gan weld sut mae prosiectau adeiladu unigol gyda’i gilydd yn cael effaith ar yr amgylchedd cyfan. Mae’r pynciau’n ymdrin â heriau amgylcheddol adeiladu a sut mae’r diwydiant yn newid i greu adeiladau mwy diogel ac iachach. Drwy ddysgu’r sgiliau hyn, mae myfyrwyr yn cael eu paratoi ar gyfer gyrfaoedd sy’n cyfrannu at ddiwydiant mwy cynaliadwy, o reoli adnoddau’n effeithiol i ddylunio adeiladau sy’n defnyddio llai o ddeunyddiau ac yn cynhyrchu llai o allyriadau.

Mae’r cwrs hwn yn addas i unrhyw un sydd eisiau helpu i wneud gwahaniaeth yn y diwydiant adeiladu trwy ddeall sut y gallwn ni leihau effaith amgylcheddol adeiladu. Mae wedi’i gynllunio i baratoi myfyrwyr i ymgymryd â’r heriau hyn gyda syniadau newydd, sgiliau ymarferol, ac ymrwymiad i gynaliadwyedd. Y nod yw adeiladu’n gallach, nid dim ond yn fwy, ar gyfer byd sy’n gallu ffynnu ymhell i’r dyfodol.

Mewn maes sydd bob amser yn newid, bydd graddedigion y rhaglen hon, yn barod i ddiwallu anghenion yfory, gyda’r offer i ailfeddwl am y ffordd yr ydym yn mynd ati i adeiladu er lles ein planed a chenedlaethau’r dyfodol.

Mae llawer o sefydliadau mawr ym myd busnes bellach wedi sefydlu systemau rheoli a gweithdrefnau archwilio, ac o ddilyn llwybrau gyrfa ein cyn-fyfyrwyr gwelwn fod cyfleoedd iddynt ar bob lefel o reoli. Bydd y radd hon, a ddatblygwyd mewn ymgynghoriad â’r BRE a Chwmnïau/Ymgynghorwyr mawr eraill, yn helpu myfyrwyr i ddatblygu gyrfa yn y meysydd hyn.  Mewn gwirionedd, mae’r cyswllt annatod â’r BRE yn arwydd o safon i fyfyrwyr ac i gyflogwyr cysylltiedig y rhaglen hon.

Mae gan yr Ysgol hanes hir o feithrin cysylltiadau â’r diwydiant, ac ers y 1990au mae rhaglenni wedi cynnal cyfarfodydd cyswllt diwydiannol bob blwyddyn.  Mae’r adborth a geir ar bolisïau, mentrau a materion newydd yn llywio’r cwricwlwm, yr addysgu a’r ymarfer, yn enwedig y mewnbwn gwerthfawr a gafwyd (yn enwedig gan BRE) cyn dilysu’r rhaglenni. Bydd y cysylltiadau hefyd yn caniatáu i fyfyrwyr gael profiad o weithio ar brosiectau ‘byw’.

Roedd argymhellion y BRE ar gynnwys y rhaglenni/rhaglenni arfaethedig yn cynnwys:

    • Rhoi cyfle i fyfyrwyr weithio ar brosiectau rhyngddisgyblaethol gyda myfyrwyr sy’n astudio cymwysterau eraill sy’n gysylltiedig ag adeiladu, er enghraifft, penseiri, syrfewyr, peirianwyr sifil, syrfewyr meintiau, cynllunwyr a chrefftwyr; byddai’r hyn yn efelychu sut mae prosiectau adeiladu yn y byd go iawn.
    • Galluogi myfyrwyr i ennill profiad ymarferol, a thrwy hynny ddefnyddio’r theori y maen nhw wedi’i ddysgu.

Mae’r mathau yma o addysgu, sydd â’r diwydiant yn sail iddo, yn rhoi cyfle i lywio addysg, dysg, ac asesu, ac yn gwneud myfyrwyr yn fwy deniadol i gyflogwyr.

Sustainable Construction (Full-time) (MSc)

Swansea
1 Year Full-time
2:2 honours degree

The construction industry is a huge part of our world and provides jobs to millions, with over 100 million people around the globe relying on it for their livelihood. But, as the industry builds cities, roads, and houses, it also uses up a lot of our natural resources and creates serious environmental impact.

Nearly half of the world’s carbon emissions come from the built environment, and this sector consumes about 50% of all extracted natural materials. This high demand is placing more pressure on the environment, making it essential for the industry to think and act more sustainably.

The Sustainable Construction course at UWTSD gives students the tools they need to help change the way we build, focusing on reducing these impacts. The course explores ways to cut down on carbon emissions by using sustainable construction practices. Students learn about the latest strategies in waste management, exploring how we can reduce the amount of landfill waste produced by construction and find more eco-friendly ways to handle materials.

The course covers a wide range of essential skills and knowledge that go beyond just building structures. It’s about learning to use sustainable methods that protect valuable resources like water and reduce waste, ensuring that future construction can meet society’s needs without depleting the planet’s resources.

On this course, students are taught how sustainable construction can make a positive difference. They’ll look at the big picture, seeing how individual building projects add up to make an impact on the whole environment. Topics cover the environmental challenges of construction and how the industry is changing to create safer, healthier buildings. By learning these skills, students are prepared for careers that contribute to a more sustainable industry, from managing resources effectively to designing buildings that use fewer materials and produce lower emissions.

This course suits anyone who wants to help make a difference in the construction industry by understanding how we can minimise the environmental impact of building. It’s designed to prepare students to take on these challenges with new ideas, practical skills, and a commitment to sustainability. The goal is to build smarter, not just bigger, for a world that can thrive well into the future.

In a field that is always changing, graduates from this programme will be ready to meet tomorrow’s needs, equipped to rethink the way we approach construction for the sake of our planet and future generations.

  • Assessments used within this Programme are normally formative or summative. In the former assessment is designed to ensure students become aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Typically, such assessment will take the form of practical exercises where a more hands-on approach shows student’s ability on a range of activities.

Traditional formal time-constrained assessment is by means of tests and examinations, normally of two-hour duration. Examinations are a traditional method of verifying that the work produced is the students’ own work.

To help authenticate student coursework, some modules require that the student and lecturer negotiate the topic for assessment on an individual basis, allowing the lecturer to monitor progress.

Some modules where the assessment is research-based require students to verbally/visually present the research results to the lecturer and peers, followed by a question and answer session.

Such assessment strategies are in accord with the learning and teaching strategies employed by the team, that is, where the aim is to generate work that is mainly student-driven, individual, reflective and where appropriate, vocationally-orientated. Feedback to students will occur early in the study period and continue over the whole study session thereby allowing for greater value added to the student’s learning.

  • Some modules in this course are available to study through the medium of Welsh either fully or partially. In all cases students will be able to submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.

If you choose to study your course either fully or partially through the medium of Welsh, you may be eligible to apply for scholarships and bursaries to support you with your studies.

  • The MSc is widely recognised as a valuable postgraduate qualification.  It demonstrates the student’s ability to commit to a programme of study and develop their knowledge within that area of academic study. The programme will help develop skills which are valuable to a wide range of employers, such as the ability to analyse complex information critically, the ability to present clear and coherent arguments and the ability to present complex information in a clear manner.

Such an education will develop an awareness of the interconnectedness of the built environment, and equip the student with a qualification relevant to a number of different vocational situations.  The flexibility of the modular programme enables students to develop packages of study which satisfy specialist interests and career aspirations in the built environment.

In business, many large organisations have established management systems and auditing procedures, and our former students’ career paths demonstrate opportunities at all levels of management.  This degree, which was developed in consultation with the BRE and major Companies/Consultants, will help students develop a career in these areas.  In fact, the integral link with the BRE is a fundamental ‘kitemark’ for students and associated employers of this programme.

The School has a long history of industrial liaison.  Since the 1990s programmes have had annual industrial liaison meetings.  Feedback on new policies, initiatives and issues informed the curriculum, teaching and practice, especially when providing valuable input prior to validation (in particular BRE).  The links will also provide experience for students to work on ‘live’ projects.

Recommendations by BRE on the content of the proposed programme(s) include:

    • Providing students with the opportunity to work on interdisciplinary projects with students pursuing other construction-related qualifications, for example, architects, surveyors, civil engineers, quantity surveyors, planners and tradespeople; this approach would simulate real-life construction projects.
    • Enabling students to gain practical experience, thus applying the theory they have learnt.

These types of industrially-centred learning provide the opportunity to inform teaching, learning and assessment adding much value to employability.

Fine Art – Contemporary Dialogues (Part - Time) (MA)

Swansea
3 Year Part-Time
2:2 Honours Degree

MA Fine Art – Contemporary Dialogues at Swansea College of Art is an exciting opportunity for those who wish to explore contemporary fine art practice. This course responds to the interdisciplinary nature of modern art, allowing students to engage in a practice-based context where they can apply their skills in various forms of creative expression.

We celebrate all types of artistic expression, including painting, sculpture, installation, performance, photography, and film. This broad approach encourages students to explore artistic experimentation, helping them to discover which mediums resonate with their creative vision. The course examines the role of the artist, emphasising both independent and collaborative modes of study.

Throughout the programme, students will adopt an analytical approach to art practice, which involves a thorough critical evaluation in fine art. This approach enables them to think deeply about their work and engage in critical debate regarding contemporary issues in art. Students will learn to ask important questions that challenge their ideas and push the boundaries of their creativity. This essential skill of visual and conceptual thinking allows them to refine their artistic practice.

The programme encourages students to extend their practice across different disciplines, media, and platforms. This flexibility fosters artistic development and supports students in their pursuit of new ideas and techniques. Active participation in dialogue between creative practitioners, agencies, and institutions is a crucial part of the course. Such collaborative opportunities in art help students build valuable connections and enhance their understanding of the professional art world.

In addition to hands-on practice, students will benefit from guest lectures in fine art and workshops led by experienced artists and experts. These sessions will cover modern art techniques and engage students with contemporary art theory. Students will also have opportunities to present their work in exhibitions, providing them with real-world experience in showcasing their art.

The Fine Art (MA) programme aims to develop confident artists who can navigate the complexities of the art world. By the end of the course, students will have refined their artistic skills and gained insight into their creative motivations and identity. They will leave equipped with the knowledge and experience to contribute meaningfully to the field of art.

Whether you are an aspiring artist or someone who simply wishes to deepen your understanding of art, our Fine Art (MA) programme offers the ideal environment for growth and exploration. Join us in this journey to push the boundaries of artistic experimentation and develop a robust understanding of your practice within a supportive community.

What you will learn

At the heart of our Fine Art (MA) programme is a philosophy that prioritises creative exploration, critical thinking, and collaborative learning. Throughout the taught part of the programme, you will be expected to undertake material investigations and research into contemporary themes, with consideration given to environmental, economic, social, and cultural issues.

Throughout the course, you will engage in various artistic techniques and media, focusing on developing your personal artistic voice. The course is designed to be student-led, encouraging you to propose and direct projects that reflect your individual interests and perspectives. • Assessment is carried out through coursework, both written practical and presented.

There is a 4,000-word theoretical essay with a poster presentation in Semester 1, and a 5,000-word report in Semester 3, which accompanies the practical work.

There are no exams on this course. Students are formatively assessed throughout a module. Summative assessment takes place at the end of a module, which includes a presentation of the work to the assessment team.

A variety of teaching and learning methods are used throughout the course, which includes, among others:

    Tutorials
These tutorials are held on a regular basis.

In Semester 1, full-time/Year 1, part-time, each student sees and discusses his/her work with a member of staff as part of each module. In Semesters 2 and 3, full-time/Years 2 and 3, part-time, students work more independently and sign up for tutorials within, or across, their discipline, in addition to those scheduled when their work requires support.

As a team, we ensure that every student in the final semester/year of the course is seen by at least one member of the academic staff each week.

    Group Tutorials/Seminars
These are held on a regular basis, across all stages of the course, with one member of staff. They provide an excellent opportunity for students to share and exchange ideas with their peers in a structured manner, in addition to valuable input from staff.

    Informal & Formal presentations
Some of the modules have a presentation of ideas as part of the module outcome and are an essential way of sharing ideas across the course. Presenting work informally to peers is also part of the seminar teaching and a way of getting valuable feedback on the progress of the work.

    Exhibiting work
At the end of the course, there is an opportunity, if appropriate, to show outcomes from the course in a curated exhibition. Students are also supported to create their own exhibitions during the middle part of the course if they wish to do so.

  • Our students have access to a diverse range of equipment and resources which, in most cases, is sufficient to complete their programme of study. We provide the basic materials necessary for students to develop their practical work within our extensive workshop and studio facilities.

However, it is likely that art and design students will incur some additional costs in the extension of their personal practice. Examples include purchasing their own specialised materials and equipment, joining optional study trips, and paying for printing.

Depending on distance and duration, optional study visits can vary in cost from approximately £10 to visit local galleries and exhibitions, to £200 plus for overseas or longer UK study visits. These costs cover such things as transport and entry to venues and accommodation. There are normally reduced rates for our students.

We are continuously reviewing our Welsh medium provision, the precise availability of modules will vary depending on staff availability and research interests, new topics of study, timetabling and student demand. Where your course offers modules available through the medium of Welsh this may vary from year to year, and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. This means the availability of specific Welsh medium modules cannot be guaranteed.

What you will learn

The MSC Policing (operational and strategic leadership) degree has been designed after extensive consultation with the Welsh Police Forces. With the introduction of the Police Education Qualification Framework (PEQF) which has established a degree entry level for all PCs receiving full occupational competency.

It has been identified there is now an educational gap between the ranks, with PCs eventually all being degree level, while some Chief Inspectors do not have any formal accredited qualifications, despite working at a high level of critical thinking.

The MSc will allow senior officers to gain recognition for prior learning and experience and develop enhanced skills in leadership both on an operational and strategic level.

This course is designed to be delivered via a combination of online and blended learning, which will allow officers to undertake the course whilst still working and reduce abstraction time; this is in line with the needs of the force and will also follow the pattern set down by the degree apprenticeship that we currently deliver with South Wales and Gwent Police forces.

The course also allows officers to apply for recognition of prior experiential learning (RPEL) against a number of modules such as Operational Leadership, Corporate Governance in Policing, Strategic Management in Policing. Through consultation with the forces, this is an attractive option as it gives recognition for the skills and knowledge they have already gained within their working career.
