Philosophy and Religion (Full-time) (MA)

Distance Learning
2 Years Full-time
2:2 honours degree  or UWTSD recognised equivalent

The Philosophy and Religion MA programme is a distance-learning course designed for students eager to explore fundamental questions about life and existence. If you’re interested in studying big ideas from both Eastern and Western traditions, this course offers the perfect opportunity. You will explore key topics such as the nature of the self, reality, and religious experiences, while learning about different philosophical and religious perspectives.

Throughout the course, you will look at how Eastern and Western traditions have tried to answer life’s most important questions. By studying Eastern traditions like Buddhism and Hinduism, and Western traditionssuch as Greek philosophy or Christian thought, you’ll see how different cultures and belief systems understand ideas about the self, reality, and the world around us. These traditions have shaped human thought for centuries, and by studying them, you will gain a critical understanding of how ideas about philosophy, religion, and theology connect to real-world issues.

The course allows you to engage with philosophical perspectives and religious perspectives that challenge and expand your thinking. You will look at topics like spirituality, ethics, and the ways different cultures understand the meaning of life and existence. You will also study the concept of religious experiences, learning how they are described, interpreted, and understood across different belief systems.

In addition to exploring the ideas themselves, you will develop skills in hermeneutics—the study of how to interpret texts and ideas. This will help you better understand complex topics and think critically about how religious and philosophical ideas influence culture and society. As you study, you will also explore the idea of traditions of wisdom, seeing how these key philosophies and religions help guide human behaviour and thinking.

This programme is perfect for those who want to learn about the world’s global traditions and how they shape the way we view life, spirituality, and reality. Whether you are new to philosophy and religion, or you have already studied them in some depth, this course will help you gain a deeper understanding of the key ideas that have influenced human thought for centuries.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to think more critically about philosophy, and religion, from a global perspective, understanding how different traditions have shaped ideas about life, the self, and the world around us.

Philosophy and Religion (Part-time) (MA)

Distance Learning
4 Years Part-time
2:2 honours degree  or UWTSD recognised equivalent

The Philosophy and Religion MA is a part-time, distance-learning programme designed for individuals seeking to explore profound questions about existence, meaning, and belief. Over four years, you’ll engage with diverse traditions, from Eastern philosophies like Buddhism and Hinduism to Western perspectives such as Greek philosophy and Christian theology.

This programme provides a rich exploration of topics like the nature of the self, reality, and religious experience. You’ll analyse how different cultures approach ethical dilemmas, spirituality, and the search for wisdom, gaining critical insight into the connections between philosophy, religion, and contemporary global issues.

Key to this course is developing interpretative skills through hermeneutics, enabling you to critically examine texts, ideas, and their cultural contexts. By studying the interplay between religious and philosophical thought, you’ll deepen your understanding of how these ideas influence behaviour, culture, and society.

Designed for both newcomers and those with prior knowledge, the programme invites you to reflect on how traditions of wisdom can offer valuable insights into modern challenges. By the end of the course, you’ll have a global perspective on both philosophy and religion.

What you will learn

The BA in Liberal Arts offers a rich, broad-based programme for students with an interest in Humanities subjects. Our approach combines structure with flexibility, encouraging exploration while building strong foundations in historical inquiry, cultural engagement, practical humanities, and the human mind.

In the first two years, you’ll engage in Basic Studies, an innovative model that introduces a wide range of subjects, helping you discover and refine your interests across interdisciplinary fields. You’ll make meaningful choices about your areas of focus, selecting modules from various schools within the faculty to build a degree that suits your personal and academic interests.

In the third year, you’ll choose two strands for in-depth study, diving into areas that align with your developing profile and career ambitions. This approach enables a bespoke degree that combines both breadth and depth, ensuring you gain relevant knowledge and practical skills for the real world.

Our teaching philosophy prioritises your autonomy, fostering critical and creative thinking while supporting you in forming connections across disciplines. Each choice you make throughout this degree shapes a personalised and relevant academic experience, equipping you for various paths post-graduation.

    Alternative entry routes

If this course interests you, but you don’t have the entry requirements to join our bachelor’s degree you could consider:

    • ‘with Foundation Year’. This route is designed to give you extra support as it provides you with an additional year (full-time) of supported study.

Once you successfully complete your Foundation Year studies, you will automatically advance onto the main degree.

    • Certificate in Higher Education (CertHE). This is a one-year course and is equivalent to the first year of the three year, full-time bachelor’s degree.

Once you have successfully completed your CertHE studies, you will be eligible to progress for the remaining two years of the bachelor’s degree.
