    • Certificate in Higher Education (CertHE). This is a one-year course and is equivalent to the first year of the three year, full-time bachelor’s degree.

Once you have successfully completed your CertHE studies, you will be eligible to progress for the remaining two years of the bachelor’s degree.

These are ideal routes if you are returning to study after a gap, or if you have not previously studied this subject, or if you did not achieve the grades you need for a place on this degree.

    Admissions Advice and Support

For courses of more than six months’ duration you will require a Student visa.

International students who require a Student visa should apply for our full-time courses as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship.

For full information read our visa application and guides.

Please note students receiving US Federal Aid are only able to apply for in-person, on-campus programmes which will have no elements of online study.

  • Assessments are devised to maximise the link between theory and practice and allow students to demonstrate intellectual rigour and to reflect critically on their own workplace experiences.

Differing means of assessment are employed to enable students to demonstrate their learning in various ways such as reports, reflective work, presentations, individual and some group work, although there is always individual assessment. Formative assessment is utilised to enhance leaner understanding and to build learner confidence, as well as to identify where additional tutorial support may be needed. For formative assessments quizzes can be enjoyable and work well. Students are encouraged to bring their own research to class for sharing with others who contribute.

Feedback will generally be provided through the online platform, Moodle. The programme team also provide face to face feedback in order to ensure that students appreciate and learn from the feedback provided and are able to discuss all aspects of their performance and lessons which may be applied in the future.

In summary, in order to create competent reflective practitioners, the programme will:

    • Encourage students to undertake independent reading and research to broaden their individual knowledge and understanding of the subject
    • Employ assessment methods that place an emphasis on critical analysis, evaluation and reflective practice
    • Test the knowledge and skill base through assessed coursework and practical exercises.
  • UWTSD prides itself on being a bilingual University and although there aren’t currently any modules available through the medium of Welsh on this course, in all cases students can submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.

    Welsh Opportunities

As a leading Welsh university, we are proud to offer dedicated support services and halls of residence for Welsh-speaking students, encouraging the sense of community and the feeling of a home away from home, including joining clubs and societies for Welsh speakers and becoming a member of our vibrant Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol branch.

    Opportunities to Learn Welsh

We also provide a variety of opportunities to learn and develop your Welsh language skills.

  • As an institution, we seek to continually enhance the student experience and as a result, additional costs may be incurred by the student on activities that will add value to their education.

It is possible to complete this programme of study without any additional costs. Students may wish to register for an ILM L5 Coaching and Mentoring certificate at an additional cost of £160.

  • You may be eligible for funding to help support your study. To find out about scholarships, bursaries and other funding opportunities that are available, please visit our Bursaries and Scholarships section.

  • The programme is focused on developing mature students’ leadership and management skills and their application to the workplace.

After successful completion of the standalone level 4 programme, students can leave the University with both a level 4 Cert HE and an ILM level 4 Certificate in Leadership and Management. Most successful students choose to progress and to continue their full-time studies by undertaking a 2-year BA top-up. The 2-year BA in Leadership & Management also offers progressing students professional recognition given by the Institute of Leadership and Management, whose mission is to “Inspire Great Leadership”.

Employer engagement provides opportunities for networking and greater understanding of the field of study, and helps the university anticipate the potential future needs of employers. Employers and Awarding bodies are consulted at the point of the material design and module content as well as an input on the programme in shape of speakers from industry.

Anthropology and Religious Studies (BA Hons)

Carmarthen
3 Years Full-time
96 - 112 UCAS Tarriff Points

BA Anthropology and Religious Studies is an exciting degree that looks at how people live, think, and believe in different cultures across the world. It brings together two key areas of study, Anthropology and Religious Studies, giving you the tools to explore what shapes human societies.

In anthropology, you will learn about the way people live in different cultures and how societies have developed over time. You’ll study both past and present human societies, understanding the variety of ways people interact with each other and their environment. This involves exploring subjects like ethnography in anthropology, which is the practice of studying people and cultures through close observation. You will also investigate how social theory and power play a role in shaping societies.

Religious studies focuses on understanding different religions from around the world. You will learn about religious beliefs, practices, and institutions, examining how they influence people’s lives. As you study these topics, you’ll explore themes such as ritual and myth, which are central to many religions. You’ll also look at how sacred space in societies and iconography in human societies—the use of symbols and images—help define religious and cultural identities.

This Anthropology and Religious Studies BA gives you a social scientific approach to understanding the world, combining both theoretical and practical perspectives. This means you will not only learn about the theories behind human cultures and religions but also gain real insights by studying different communities in-depth.

The degree is flexible, offering both full-time and part-time study, so you can choose the path that works best for you. Whether you’re interested in ancient rituals or how modern societies are shaped by religion, this degree provides a rich and varied way to explore the diverse ways people live and believe.

By the end of this programme, you will have a deep understanding of the complexities of human culture and religion, equipping you for careers in areas like social research, education, or community work.

Carmarthen
3 Years Full-time
96-112 UCAS Points

If you are fascinated by Ancient Egyptian culture and want to explore how the past shapes our world today, this programme offers a unique opportunity to study archaeology with a focus on Egypt’s rich history. This course is designed for students who want to study material culture, heritage, and the practices that have helped uncover the mysteries of Egypt. You will gain hands-on experience with real artefacts, learn from experts in the field, and explore theoretical approaches that connect archaeology with museum studies, heritage studies, and anthropology.

Throughout the programme, you will engage with a wide range of topics relating to Egyptology and archaeological practice. You will study not only Egypt but also look at ancient history in a comparative way, drawing connections between different ancient civilisations, including Greece and Rome. The course balances practical experience with theoretical knowledge, ensuring that students develop a strong foundation in both aspects of archaeology.

An exciting part of this course is its focus on fieldwork and excavations. You will have the chance to participate in real archaeological digs, learning how to uncover and interpret evidence from the past. This hands-on learning, supported by academic study, allows you to understand the importance of material culture and heritage in a broader context. You’ll learn how artefacts and ancient sites are preserved and presented to the public, providing essential skills for careers in heritage and museum studies.

The programme encourages an inter-disciplinary study approach, blending subjects like anthropology and history to deepen your understanding of ancient societies. By the end of your studies, you will not only have a detailed knowledge of Ancient Egypt but also a broader awareness of how different civilisations have shaped human history.

This degree is perfect for those looking to pursue careers in archaeology, museums, heritage studies, or related fields. Through a blend of theoretical approaches and practical experiences, it prepares students for a range of exciting opportunities that involve working with the past to better understand the present and future.
