MBA graduate celebrates success after overcoming injury, illness, and financial hardship
Graduating from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) London today is a proud milestone for 21-year-old Sandeep Gurjar, whose determination to succeed saw him overcome a career-ending sports injury, serious illness, and significant financial challenges.
Originally from Jaipur, India, Sandeep came to the UK to study an MBA in Business Management after a leg injury brought an end to his ambitions of representing his country as an international Taekwondo athlete. Throughout his studies, he worked night shifts to fund his education and living costs, determined not to let any setback prevent him from achieving his degree.
“I had to completely rethink my future after my injury,” said Sandeep. “It was one of the most difficult periods of my life, but I realised I needed to find a new dream. Studying for an MBA gave me that opportunity.”
Sandeep pursued his studies with the help of a close friend who encouraged and supported him to study in the UK. He chose UWTSD for its strong reputation, practical approach to learning and affordable tuition fees.
“My friend believed in me when I needed it most,” he said. “I’ll always be grateful for that support because it gave me the chance to change my life.”
While studying, Sandeep balanced night shifts with full-time study to pay his tuition fees, rent and living expenses. His biggest challenge came when he was diagnosed with a serious illness, forcing him to take time away from work and placing him under significant financial strain.
“There were days when I was physically exhausted and worried about how I would manage financially,” he said. “But giving up was never an option because I knew why I had come here. Every challenge made me more determined to finish my degree.”
Despite these setbacks, Sandeep says his experience at UWTSD transformed him.
“The biggest transformation for me has been my confidence,” he said. “Before joining UWTSD, I was very shy and afraid of speaking in front of people. Through presentations, group work and the support of my lecturers, I developed the confidence to present my ideas to large audiences. It has completely changed me both personally and professionally.”
He credits the University’s supportive lecturers and practical approach to learning with helping him develop the leadership, communication and strategic thinking skills needed for an international business career.
Sandeep hopes to begin his career in business management before progressing into leadership roles within an international organisation. He also hopes his story will encourage others facing their own challenges.
“My journey has taught me that setbacks do not define your future,” he said. “If you work hard, stay determined and never lose faith in yourself, you can achieve your dreams. I hope my story inspires others to keep going, even when life becomes difficult.”
