Orla's BA in Surface Pattern and Textiles Experience
What was your favourite thing about the Swansea campus?
My favourite thing about studying in Swansea was being so close to the surrounding natural landscapes like the Llanelli Wetlands. These environments along with the coastlines provided constant inspiration for my design work, particularly in my use of colour, texture and atmosphere. I also really valued the excellent facilities available on campus. Once trained on the equipment, we were able to work independently, which gave me the freedom to experiment, develop my technical skills and bring my ideas to life. Swansea offered a balance creative opportunities, independence and access to nature, making it an inspiring place to study.
Why did you choose UWTSD?
I chose UWTSD because of its strong reputation for creative courses and the opportunity to specialise in surface pattern and textiles design. The combination of traditional and digital processes, alongside access to specialist facilities, appealed to me and aligned with the way I like to work. I was also drawn to the supportive learning environment and the emphasis on developing an individual creative identity. The course offered numerous live briefs and industry-focused projects, allowing me to work to a professional standard, build confidence, and make valuable connections within the creative industry.
What did you enjoy outside your studies?
Outside of my studies, I have enjoyed exploring parts of Swansea like the coastlines that I don’t have as easy access to at home. I have also really enjoyed building friendships with my fellow course mates and other students through shared creative interests. Living in Swansea allowed me to balance university life with the outdoors, helping me maintain my wellbeing while experiencing what the city has to offer and meeting new amazing people.
What do you hope to do when you graduate?
I have recently started working as a freelance print designer for a print house, And So On, creating surface patterns and design work for commercial use. I secured this role through developing my portfolio during university and gaining the confidence to reach out to brands and the support from my lectures. My course at UWTSD has been instrumental, providing access to professional equipment, industry-standard software, and guidance from lectures who encourage real-word practice and confidence. In the future I am looking forward to exhibiting at New Designers 2026 thanks to my lectures and I look forward to gaining any opportunities that come my way.
What was your favourite thing about your course?
My favourite thing about the Surface Pattern and Textiles course is screen printing. I love how hands on it is and how it lets me experiment with colour, texture and layering in a really physical way. I’ve really enjoyed learning different techniques and building confidence using professional equipment in the studio. It’s also giving me freedom to develop my own style and ideas. The process feels creative but also technical, which I really enjoy. Screen printing is definitely the part of my course that it excites me most every day.
Would you recommend UWTSD and why?
Yes, I would definitely recommend UWTSD. Studying in Swansea has been a great experience, with a creative and supportive environment that makes it easy to settle in and feel inspired. The facilities are excellent, especially the print and studio spaces, and once you’re shown how to use the equipment, you’re encouraged to work independently and experiment. I’ve really benefited from the live briefs, which give real industry experience and help you understand professional standards. There are also lots of opportunities to make connections and build your portfolio. Overall, it’s a course that supported both creative development and employability in a practical way.
