A basic ‘art and design kit’ will cost approximately £100 but you may well already have much of the equipment required so check with us first.  Also, although we have extensive dedicated digital design studios (PC and MAC) for you to undertake your coursework you may wish to bring your own digital devices, again check with us first before making a purchase.

Depending on distance and duration, optional study visits can vary in cost from approximately £10 to visit local galleries and exhibitions to £200+ for overseas visits – these costs cover things like transport, entry to venues and accommodation and are normally at reduced rates for our students.

Archaeology (Full-time) (BA Hons)

Carmarthen
3 Years Full-time
96-112 UCAS Points

The Archaeology degree programme offers exciting opportunities to learn both in the classroom and in the field. You will learn from experts who are at the cutting edge of field research and will take part in hands-on learning through practical archaeological investigations. You will also gain experience in laboratory techniques, which are a key part of understanding and working with the material remains of the past. The skills you develop here will be useful both during the course and in your future career.

Archaeology is all about exploring the human past through the artefacts people have left behind. Some of the material remains we study include stone tools, pottery, and bones. By examining these we can find out how people lived and how their societies were organised. We learn about the ways humanity interacted with the environments around them and how their ideas about the world can be seen in the things they made.

Understanding the past also means looking at the bigger picture, including historic buildings, monuments, and landscapes. We explore how humans have used the land and how environmental change affected their lives. To understand how people lived, we also need to learn about their beliefs and how they viewed themselves and others in both life and death. All this information helps us see how human development has shaped the world we live in today.

To study archaeology effectively, it is important to think about theoretical and ethical questions. These include issues like heritage, representation, and the impact of technology on our understanding of the past. We also examine how digital applications can help us learn more about ancient societies. By exploring these areas, we can better understand the evolution of the human body, mind, and ideas over time.

In this programme, you will have the chance to develop a wide range of skills across different areas of study. You will learn archaeological methods that help you examine and interpret the human past. This includes using modern technology and techniques to study ancient DNA and artefacts. You will also take part in field research, which will give you the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in real-world settings.

By the end of the course, you will have a deeper understanding of archaeology and the human past. You will be well-equipped with the skills needed to explore how people lived and how their lives have influenced the world we know today. This programme prepares you for a future in archaeology and related fields, opening doors to further study and a range of exciting careers.

Students may spend up to £300 per year on books and additional related materials.

Students are expected to submit 2 hard copies of their final project, the estimated cost for binding these is £20.

    Optional Field trip:

The faculty works to ensure that there is a range of fieldwork and field trip options available both locally and internationally. Thus students can opt to take either more expensive or less expensive placements. The Faculty subsidises these but the cost each year is dependent on airfare, location, and currency exchange rates. Below are the upper end of expected costs based on where students have currently done placements.

Fieldwork (depending on where the student decides to do fieldwork): c. £500 - £1,500
    Individual trips: c. £5 - £50

Architecture (Full-time) (BSc Hons)

Swansea
3 Years Full-time
120-136 UCAS points, Portfolio/Interview

Architecture is a field that shapes the world we live in. Architects are experts in the design of buildings and places, creating the spaces where we live, work, and play. They turn design ideas into real buildings, working with engineers, contractors, and other experts to build sustainable environments that are both useful and beautiful.

Our course offers a new way to learn about architecture, focusing on local ideas but also looking at a global perspective.

The programme is approved by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and provides students with the first step (Part One) in the three-step journey to becoming a qualified architect.

Throughout this course, we balance theory with practical skills to give you a complete architecture education. We focus on how architecture can meet people’s needs in a way that respects their culture, while also using the latest building technology and contemporary design ideas.

In our studio, you will learn a wide range of skills. These include freehand drawing, surveying, CAD (Computer-Aided Design), graphic composition and model making.

You will work in small groups to explore and develop your designs, and then you will have the chance to grow your critical and creative thinking skills and shape your own unique approach to design.

Architecture is about more than just designing buildings. It is about creating spaces that meet the needs of people, respect their culture, and fit the character and traditions of their communities. At the same time, it uses the best of new technology and the latest contemporary design ideas to improve the environment. This course will teach you how to combine all these elements into high-quality design.

Our program is the starting point of the professional path to becoming an architect. It sets the foundation for you to gain the skills and qualifications you need to succeed in the field of architecture. By studying with us, you will learn how to create spaces that are both imaginative and practical, and that respect and regenerate the environment around them.

We offer both undergraduate and postgraduate pathways in Architecture, allowing you to progress toward professional architect qualification all within one institution. You can choose to study either full-time or part-time depending on your needs.

Find out more about our Part-time  BSc (Hons) Architecture and Postgraduate MArch Architecture courses.

The BSc (Hons) Architecture degree is currently prescribed by the ARB (Architects Registration Board) at Part 1 level for purposes of registration as an Architect in the UK. The ARB is revising its registration requirements, removing the necessity of an undergraduate qualification in architecture. Consequently, ARB prescription of Part 1 qualifications will cease on December 31st, 2027. Students entering the BSc (Hons) Architecture degree course from September 2025 will graduate from June 2028, post the cessation of ARB prescription at Part 1. Therefore, their degree will not be an ARB-prescribed award. Nonetheless the programme will continue to map to the ARB criteria. Furthermore, the BSc (Hons) Architecture degree will continue to be validated by the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) at Part 1. The RIBA will persist in validating architecture qualifications at Parts 1, 2, and 3, which form the typical route to RIBA Chartered Membership.

    Alternative entry routes

If this course interests you, but you don’t have the entry requirements to join our bachelor’s degree you could consider:

    • ‘with Foundation Year’. This route is designed to give you extra support as it provides you with an additional year (full-time) of supported study.

Once you successfully complete your Foundation Year studies, you will automatically advance onto the main degree.

    • Certificate in Higher Education (CertHE). This is a one-year course and is equivalent to the first year of the three-year, full-time bachelor’s degree.

Once you have successfully completed your CertHE studies, you will be eligible to progress for the remaining two years of the bachelor’s degree.

These are ideal routes if you are returning to study after a gap, or if you have not previously studied this subject, or if you did not achieve the grades you need for a place on this degree.

    Admissions Advice and Support

We may make you a lower offer based on a range of factors, such as your background, experiences and individual circumstances. This is known as ‘Contextual Admissions’. For specific advice and support you can contact our enquiries team for more information about entry requirements.

    English language requirements

If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.0, with not less than 5.5 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests.

Visit the International Applications section of our website to find out more about our English Language Requirements and pre-sessional English Language Courses.

    Visa and funding requirements

If you are not from the UK and you do not already have residency here, you may need to apply for a visa.

For courses of more than six months’ duration you will require a Student visa.

International students who require a Student visa should apply for our full-time courses as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship.

For full information read our visa application and guides.

Please note students receiving US Federal Aid are only able to apply for in-person, on-campus programmes which will have no elements of online study.

  • UWTSD prides itself on being a bilingual University and although there aren’t currently any modules available through the medium of Welsh on this course, in all cases students can submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.

    Welsh Opportunities

As a leading Welsh university, we are proud to offer dedicated support services and halls of residence for Welsh-speaking students, encouraging the sense of community and the feeling of a home away from home, including joining clubs and societies for Welsh speakers and becoming a member of our vibrant Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol branch.

    Opportunities to Learn Welsh

We also provide a variety of opportunities to learn and develop your Welsh language skills.

  • Design project work is assessed on the basis of a portfolio consisting of a series of assignments completed during the year.

The portfolio will include drawings, photographs of models and illustrated written reports. Feedback on student progress is given throughout the year — usually in the form of verbal comments by a team of tutors on the basis of student presentations and review attended by fellow students. Formative assessment is made at the end of each project — usually in the form of a provisional mark, which allows students to respond to feedback before the final submission of the portfolio when the final (or ‘summative’) assessment is made.

Assessments of work in the contextual modules will take the form of practical exercises during the year, reports and essays and time-constrained assessment by means of tests and formal examinations.

  • It is possible to complete this programme of study without any additional costs.

Students may wish to purchase materials for modules, such as Major Project but this is not a requirement and will have no bearing on the final grade achieved.

  • You may be eligible for funding to help support your study. To find out about scholarships, bursaries and other funding opportunities that are available, please visit our Bursaries and Scholarships section.

  • The programme is designed to be prescribed/validated by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) as a Part One qualification in architecture so the most likely first destination for a graduate is to work as an architectural assistant* in an architectural practice.

There are many other possible employment opportunities including other parts of the construction industry (building contractors and sub-contractors), the creative industries (applying computer drawing and visualisation skills) and planning or urban design.

Graduate skills developed by the programme (based on the ‘graduate attributes’ set out in the RIBA/ARB criteria for validation/ prescription of qualifications in architecture and the QAA benchmark statement for architecture).

    1. The ability to generate design proposals using an understanding of a body of knowledge, some at the current boundaries of professional practice and the academic discipline of architecture;
    2. The ability to apply a range of communication methods and media to present design proposals clearly and effectively;
    3. Understanding of the alternative materials, processes and techniques that apply to architectural design and building construction;
    4. The ability to evaluate evidence, arguments and assumptions in order to make and present sound judgments within a structured discourse relating to architectural culture, theory and design;
    5. Knowledge of the context of the architect and the construction industry and the professional qualities needed for decision making in complex and unpredictable circumstances.
    6. The ability to identify individual learning needs and understand the personal responsibility required for further professional education.

(* the term ‘architectural assistant’ is the job designation of those on the route to professional qualification as an architect until completion of Part Three. Terms such as  ‘assistant architect’, ‘architect in training’ or ‘part 1 architect’ may not be used as the title ‘architect’ is protected by statute and may only be used by those on the Register of Architects (apart from three exceptions stated in the Architects Act: ‘naval architect’, ‘landscape architect’ and ‘golf-course architect’).

  • Asesir trwy waith cwrs, yn ysgrifenedig ac yn ymarferol. Nid oes arholiadau ar y cwrs hwn. Caiff myfyrwyr eu hasesu’n ffurfiannol trwy gydol modwl, a chynhelir asesiad crynodol ar ddiwedd modwl. Defnyddir amrywiaeth o ddulliau addysgu a dysgu trwy gydol y cwrs sy’n cynnwys, ymhlith eraill, y canlynol:

    Tiwtorialau Anffurfiol

Cynhelir y tiwtorialau hyn yn rheolaidd, ar draws pob lefel. Ym Mlwyddyn 1, mae pob myfyriwr yn gweld ac yn trafod ei waith gydag aelod o staff ym mhob sesiwn stiwdio, ac yn yr un modd ym Mlwyddyn 2. Mae myfyrwyr y drydedd a’r bedwaredd flwyddyn yn tueddu i weithio’n fwy annibynnol ac maen nhw’n cofrestru ar gyfer tiwtorial pan fyddant yn teimlo bod angen. Fodd bynnag, fel tîm, rydym yn sicrhau bod pob myfyriwr ym Mlwyddyn 3 yn cael ei weld gan o leiaf un aelod o’r staff academaidd bob wythnos. Rydym yn ymfalchïo yn y ffaith bod cyfle i weld staff mor rheolaidd ag y dymunwch.

    Tiwtorialau Ffurfiol

Cynhelir y rhain ddwywaith y tymor gydag o leiaf dau aelod o staff. Trafodir y gwaith, datblygiad ymarferol a chysyniadol, bwriadau’r myfyriwr i’r dyfodol ac ati. Mae’n gyfle i’r naill barti neu’r llall godi unrhyw broblemau/pryderon. Caiff adroddiad ysgrifenedig o’r tiwtorial ei ddyblygu, a bydd y myfyriwr yn cadw un copi a chaiff y llall ei storio yn ei ffeil cofnodion.

    Beirniadaethau grwp

Cynhelir y rhain yn rheolaidd, ar draws pob lefel, gydag un aelod o staff. Maen nhw’n gyfle gwych i fyfyrwyr rannu a chyfnewid syniadau gyda’u cyfoedion mewn modd strwythuredig yn ogystal â chael mewnbwn gwerthfawr gan staff.

    Cyflwyniadau Anffurfiol a Ffurfiol

Mae natur y cyflwyniadau’n amrywio yn ôl y lefel: ym Mlwyddyn 1, cyflwynir cyflwyniadau anffurfiol hanner ffordd drwy’r semester cyntaf er mwyn helpu myfyrwyr i fagu hyder wrth sôn am eu gwaith gyda’u cyfoedion a staff. Maen nhw fel arfer yn rhan o’r asesiad ar ddiwedd pob prosiect hefyd. Disgwylir i fyfyrwyr ail flwyddyn roi Cyflwyniad Ffurfiol fel rhan o’u Modwl Arfer Proffesiynol a Dylunio Grŵp ac ar ddiwedd y flwyddyn fel rhan o’u Prosiect Mawr. Ym Mlwyddyn 3, mae Cyflwyniad Ffurfiol yn rhan o’r asesiad terfynol yn y Sioe Raddio.

    Arddangos gwaith

Eto, mae natur hyn yn amrywio yng nghyd-destun y prosiectau, y gwaith i’w asesu a chyfnod y rhaglen - o ran ffurfioldeb, gall amrywio o fod mewn lleoliad cyhoeddus i fod wrth ddesg y myfyriwr unigol.

  • Mae gan ein myfyrwyr fynediad at ystod amrywiol o offer ac adnoddau, sydd yn y rhan fwyaf o achosion yn ddigonol i gwblhau eu rhaglen astudio. Rydym yn darparu’r deunyddiau sylfaenol sydd eu hangen ar fyfyrwyr i ddatblygu eu gwaith ymarferol o fewn ein cyfleusterau gweithdy a stiwdio helaeth.

Fodd bynnag, mae’n debygol y bydd myfyrwyr celf a dylunio yn gorfod talu rhai costau ychwanegol i ymestyn eu harchwiliad o’u harfer personol. Er enghraifft, prynu eu deunyddiau a’u hoffer arbenigol eu hunain, ymuno â theithiau astudio dewisol, ac argraffu.
Mae disgwyl i fyfyrwyr ddod â’u hoffer celf a dylunio personol eu hunain gyda nhw pan fyddant yn dechrau’r cwrs. Gallwn roi cyngor ar yr offer cywir sydd ei angen ar gyfer eich rhaglen astudio a chyfeirio at gyflenwyr priodol os byddwch yn dymuno prynu eitemau hanfodol cyn, neu yn ystod, eich astudiaethau.

Bydd ‘pecyn celf a dylunio’ sylfaenol yn costio tua £100 ond mae’n bosibl y bydd gennych lawer o’r offer sydd ei angen yn barod, felly cysylltwch â ni yn gyntaf i wirio. Er bod gennym stiwdios dylunio digidol pwrpasol helaeth (PC a MAC) i chi wneud eich gwaith cwrs, efallai y byddwch hefyd yn dymuno dod â’ch dyfeisiau digidol eich hunain gyda chi. Eto, cysylltwch â ni yn gyntaf cyn prynu unrhyw beth.

    Lleoliad

Bydd ffi ychwanegol o £1800 ar gyfer myfyrwyr sy’n dewis astudio’r rhaglen gyda’r lleoliad blwyddyn mewn diwydiant dewisol.

  • Astudio drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg neu Ddwyieithog

Mae’r Drindod Dewi Sant yn ymfalchïo yn y ffaith ei bod yn Brifysgol ddwyieithog ac mae modiwlau ar y cwrs hwn ar gael i’w hastudio drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg naill ai’n llawn neu’n rhannol. Ym mhob achos bydd myfyrwyr yn gallu cyflwyno asesiadau ysgrifenedig drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg.

All applicants to Swansea College of Art are required to have an interview.

We really enjoy the interview process, getting to know you and your work, and we feel that this is the best way to find the right students for our programmes. This also ensures that our applicants have all the information they need to make the right choice for them too.

If you have any queries before your interview, please contact us at artanddesign@uwtsd.ac.uk.

    Portfolio

We ask that you bring a portfolio of some past and current work. Your portfolio is a collection of your most exciting and representative work, showcasing your creative abilities, technical skills, and artistic vision. It tells the story of your creative journey, highlighting your unique style, interests, and ideas as they develop. We interpret the term ‘portfolio’ broadly and are happy for you to do the same - this can include finished pieces, work in progress, sketchbooks, drawings, and projects that are still unfolding, as these give us insight into your thinking and creative process. Whether in physical or digital format, your portfolio is an opportunity to showcase your creative journey in a way that feels authentic to you, with each piece highlighting your creative potential and enthusiasm for the programme you are applying for.

We understand that many applicants are still mid-qualification (e.g. A-Level, BTEC, L3, Foundation) and are developing an emerging body of work, so there’s no pressure for everything to be polished or complete.

  • Assessment is carried out through coursework, both written and practical. There are no exams on this course. Students are formatively assessed throughout a module, summative assessment takes place at the end of a module. A variety of teaching and learning methods are used throughout the course which includes amongst others;

    Informal Tutorials

These tutorials are held on a regular basis, across all levels. In Year 1 each student sees and discusses his / her work with a member of staff at each studio session, likewise in Year 2. Third and fourth year students tend to work more independently and sign up for tutorial when she/he feels the need arises. However, as a team, we ensure that every student in Year 3 is seen by at least one member of the academic staff each week.  We pride ourselves on the fact that there is the opportunity to see staff as regularly as you may require.

    Formal Tutorials

These are held twice a term with at least two members of staff. The work is discussed, practical and conceptual development, future intentions of the student etc. It is an opportunity for any issues/concerns by either party, to be raised. A written account of the tutorial is duplicated, one copy kept by the student the other stored in his / her records file.

    Group critiques

These are held on a regular basis, across all levels, with one member of staff. They provide an excellent opportunity for students to share and exchange ideas with their peers in a structured manner in addition to valuable input from staff.

    Informal & Formal presentations

The nature of the presentations varies according to the level: in Year 1 informal presentations are introduced halfway through the first semester in order to help students gain confidence in talking about their work to their peers and staff it is also usually part of the assessment at the end of each project. 2nd-year students are expected to give a Formal Presentation as part of their Professional Practice & Group Design Module and at the end of the year as part of their Major project.  In Year 3 a Formal Presentation is part of the final assessment at the Degree Show

    Exhibiting work

Again the nature of this varies within the context of the projects, the work to be assessed and the stage of the programme – it can range in formality from a public venue to the individual student’s desk space.

  • Our students have access to a diverse range of equipment and resources, which in most cases are sufficient to complete their programme of study. We provide the basic materials necessary for students to develop their practical work within our extensive workshop and studio facilities.

However, it is likely that art and design students will incur some additional costs to extend their investigation of their personal practice. For example, purchasing their own specialised materials and equipment, joining in optional study trips, and printing.

Students are expected to bring their own personal art and design equipment with them when they commence the course.  We can advise on the correct equipment needed for your programme of studies and signpost appropriate suppliers if you wish to purchase essential items before or during your studies.

    Placement

There will be an additional fee of £1800 for students who choose to study the programme with the optional year in industry placement.

  • Study through the medium of Welsh or Bilingually

UWTSD prides itself on being a bilingual University and some modules in this course are available to study through the medium of Welsh either fully or partially. In all cases students will be able to submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.

The availability of Welsh medium modules is reviewed regularly and may vary each year depending on staffing, research interests, timetabling, student demand, and minimum enrolment numbers, so specific modules cannot always be guaranteed, get in touch to discuss more.
