The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) welcomed sixth form pupils from Ysgol Bro Dinefwr for a bespoke Outdoor Adventure Education taster day, giving learners the opportunity to develop practical skills, build confidence and explore progression opportunities in outdoor education.

As the first cohort at Ysgol Bro Dinefwr to study Outdoor Education, the pupils are helping to establish a pathway towards further study at UWTSD, with potential progression opportunities from Level 4 to Level 7. The day also highlighted the existing connection between the two institutions, with a current Level 6 UWTSD student who studied at Ysgol Bro Dinefwr joining the visit to support the learners.

The programme began with a visit to Cynefin, UWTSD’s Outdoor Education Centre, before the pupils took part in a coasteering session at Lydstep. The activity formed part of the learners’ Learning in the Outdoors module and provided an opportunity to gather practical evidence towards two Agored Cymru units: Managing Risk and Sustainability.

Through the experience, pupils explored the risks associated with outdoor activities, the importance of following safety procedures and the need to protect the natural environment. They also developed their confidence, communication skills and ability to work collaboratively and support one another in a new and challenging setting.

Carwyn Evans, a teacher from Ysgol Bro Dinefwr, said:

“The coasteering session was a fantastic opportunity for the learners to apply their knowledge in a practical setting, outside the classroom. They were able to develop their understanding of risk management and sustainability, while gathering valuable evidence for their Level 3 LITO course. It was also wonderful to see their confidence grow and to witness how they supported one another throughout the experience. I would like to extend a big thank you to UWTSD, especially Denise and Tomo for organising the day and providing our learners with the chance to take part in such a valuable experience. It was an excellent way to connect what they are learning on the course with a real-life, practical experience.”

Denise Leonard, UWTSD’s Acting Programme Manager for the Outdoor Adventure Education programme, said:

“It was a real pleasure to offer these students an experiential, adventure-based learning opportunity that they might not otherwise have had the chance to enjoy. Our experienced and qualified staff took the group to a spectacular location for a coasteering session, where they learnt how to identify hazards and assess risks, plus how to manage them in such a dynamic environment. The students engaged brilliantly, and we hope the experience enriches their education and nurtures a lasting passion for adventure and the great outdoors.”
