Environment, Sustainability and Climate Change (Full-time) (BSc Hons)

Swansea
3 Years Full-time
104-120 UCAS Points

Our planet is facing an unprecedented climate crisis, along with threats to biodiversity, habitats and human development. The United Nations Learning Partnership highlights that children today will face the consequences of a changing climate, and a 2021 Lancet report found that 84% of young people report climate anxiety, and worry about their future on a degrading planet. However: these problems are not insurmountable. They simply require people willing to work to be part of the solution.

This course differs from traditional environmental science programmes in that its focus is on practical application of science and theory to finding and enacting solutions to the issues the planet faces. Our course team has a strong record in research across multiple environmental disciplines which allows coverage of contemporary environmental issues holistically from all angles. Key themes include ecology and biodiversity, climate change, sustainable development, natural resource management, coastal and marine science, and the use of industry-vital environmental technologies such as GIS and remote sensing.

This teaching is supplemented with strong industry engagement and frequent fieldwork to apply learning to real-world scenarios, build connections, and put theory into practice. You will develop skills that are highly valued by employers, such as critical thinking, the ability to understand and tackle complex issues, and the skill to present clear and logical arguments. Our high post-course employment rate, across many environmental disciplines, reflects the value of this more practical approach.

Join us to gain the knowledge and skills needed to tackle global environmental change. A sustainable future is possible; let us give you the tools to make it.

We interpret the term ‘portfolio’ broadly and are happy for you to do the same - this can include finished pieces, work in progress, sketchbooks, drawings, and projects that are still unfolding, as these give us insight into your thinking and creative process. Whether in physical or digital format, your portfolio is an opportunity to showcase your creative journey in a way that feels authentic to you, with each piece highlighting your creative potential and enthusiasm for the programme you are applying for.

We understand that many applicants are still mid-qualification (e.g. A-Level, BTEC, L3, Foundation) and are developing an emerging body of work, so there’s no pressure for everything to be polished or complete.

  • All assessment is based on 100% practical coursework.

Students are expected to demonstrate their understanding in the form of practical project work. All practical work is project and portfolio based.

  • Our students have access to a diverse range of equipment and resources, which in most cases are sufficient to complete their programme of study. We provide the basic software and cameras necessary for students to develop their practical work within our extensive workshop sessions and on location.

You will need to buy a 1TB hard drive and suitable clothes for outside learning.

  • Study through the medium of Welsh or Bilingually

UWTSD prides itself on being a bilingual University and some modules in this course are available to study through the medium of Welsh either fully or partially. In all cases students will be able to submit written assessments through the medium of Welsh.

If you choose to study your course either fully or partially through the medium of Welsh, you may be eligible to apply for scholarships and bursaries to support you with your studies.

The availability of Welsh medium modules is reviewed regularly and may vary each year depending on staffing, research interests, timetabling, student demand, and minimum enrolment numbers, so specific modules cannot always be guaranteed, get in touch to discuss more.

  • Interview

All applicants to Swansea College of Art are required to have an interview.

We really enjoy the interview process, getting to know you and your work, and we feel that this is the best way to find the right students for our programmes. This also ensures that our applicants have all the information they need to make the right choice for them too.

If you have any queries before your interview, please contact us at artanddesign@uwtsd.ac.uk.

    Portfolio

We ask that you bring a portfolio of some past and current work. Your portfolio is a collection of your most exciting and representative work, showcasing your creative abilities, technical skills, and artistic vision. It tells the story of your creative journey, highlighting your unique style, interests, and ideas as they develop.

  • Assessment is carried out through coursework, both written and practical. There are no exams on this course.

Students are formatively assessed throughout a module; summative assessment takes place at the end of a module. A variety of teaching and learning methods are used throughout the course, including:

    Tutorials
These tutorials are given across all levels. A more intense period of one-to-one tutorials occurs for the third year students who are by now working more independently. Students can request a tutorial when the need arises. However, as a team, we ensure that students are given valuable and regular support from all members of staff.

We strongly believe in students receiving individual tutorials in order to support their creative journeys.
The work, including practical and conceptual development, is discussed, along with the future intentions of the student. It is an opportunity for any issues/concerns by either party, to be raised. A written account of the tutorial is duplicated, one copy kept by the student the other stored in record files.

    Group critiques
These are held across all levels. They provide an excellent opportunity for students to share and exchange ideas with their peers in a structured manner in addition to valuable input from staff.

    Informal & Formal presentations
All students are given opportunities to talk to their fellow students about their work, allowing them to understand the importance of presentation within a fine art practice. Formal Presentation in the third year is part of their Major project leading up to the final assessment at the Degree Show.

    Exhibiting work
The nature of this varies within the context of the years. All assessments for first and second years are presented at the individual student’s studio space, followed by an end-of-year joint show within the prepared spaces, as vacated by the degree show. The preparation of these spaces, from takedown of studio spaces to conversion to exhibition, is taught, and understood, very much within the context of professional practice, for the third year.

  • Our students have access to a diverse range of equipment and resources, which in most cases are sufficient to complete their programme of study.

We provide the basic materials necessary for students to develop their practical work within our extensive workshop and studio facilities.

However, art and design students will likely incur additional costs to extend their investigation of their personal practice, such as purchasing their own specialised materials and equipment, joining optional study trips, and printing.

Students are expected to bring their own personal art and design equipment when they commence the course. We can advise on the correct equipment needed for your studies and signpost appropriate suppliers if you wish to purchase essential items before or during your studies.

A basic ‘art and design kit’ will cost approximately £100, but you may well already have much of the equipment required, so check with us first. While we have extensive dedicated digital design studios (PC and Mac) for you to undertake your coursework, you may also wish to bring your own digital devices. Check with us first before making a purchase.

Mae dylunio graffig yn cyffwrdd â’n bywydau ag amrywiaeth nad yw unrhyw gyfrwng arall yn gallu ei gynnig – mae’n ein tywys, cyfarwyddo, difyrru, ysgogi ac yn dylanwadu arnom wrth i ni deithio, defnyddio ac ystyried y byd o’n cwmpas. Yn wir, yr angen amserol hwn am ddealltwriaeth a chwestiynu dynol sy’n sail i lawer o’n rhaglen addysgu.

Rydym yn cofleidio’r newydd a dathlu’r hen – dan arweiniad gofynion yr her dan sylw, adnabyddiaeth o’n cynulleidfa a llunio deialog briodol i drosglwyddo negeseuon ein cleientiaid. Mae technoleg ddigidol yn eistedd yn hapus gyda bysedd inc a hydeimledd, yn aml yn cyfuno’n bwerus ac weithiau’n codi dadl athronyddol neu gyd-destunol.

Mae egwyddorion hanfodol teipograffeg, fformat, cynllun, llywio gwybodaeth a sgiliau meddalwedd craidd wedi’u hymgorffori yn heriau ein prosiect, ond mae eich llais gweledol unigryw a’ch synnwyr o hwyl yr un mor bwysig. Mae meintiau grwpiau llai yn creu deinamig bywiog lle mae pob myfyriwr unigol yn cael ei annog i ddilyn ei lwybr ei hun yn hytrach na mynd gyda’r llif.

Mae egwyddorion dylunio hanfodol fel teipograffeg, fformat, cynllun, llywio gwybodaeth, brandio, pecynnu cynaliadwy, a dylunio hyrwyddo, ynghyd â sgiliau meddalwedd craidd, wedi’u hymgorffori yn heriau ein prosiect; fodd bynnag, mae eich llais gweledol unigryw a’ch synnwyr o hwyl yr un mor bwysig. Yn ogystal â meistroli’r sgiliau creadigol hyn, byddwch yn ymchwilio i ddylunio emosiynol, gan sicrhau bod eich gwaith yn atseinio’n emosiynol â’r gynulleidfa darged.

Mae meintiau grwpiau llai yn creu deinamig bywiog lle mae pob myfyriwr unigol yn cael ei annog i ddilyn ei lwybr ei hun yn hytrach na mynd gyda’r llif. Mae’r tîm o staff yn obsesiynol o ran dylunio, ac rydym wrth ein bodd yn rhannu ein hangerdd mewn awyrgylch stiwdio cefnogol, cyfeillgar a bywiog. Rydym yn annog datblygiad eich cyfathrebu llafar ochr yn ochr â’r graddedigion gweledol sy’n gallu siarad yn hyderus am eu gwaith, mynegi eu dull o ddatrys problemau gweledol a datgan eu dyheadau.

Rydym yn cydnabod ffocws hanfodol ein myfyrwyr yn y dyfodol ar ddiwydiant a gyrfaoedd. Mae adeiladu portffolio yn rhan allweddol o’ch taith, wrth i chi ennill profiad ymarferol trwy friffiau byw ac ymarfer proffesiynol. Bydd gweithdai, cydweithrediadau, a gweithwyr proffesiynol gwadd yn rhoi mewnwelediad i fyd gwaith. Byddwch yn dysgu sut i lywio’r cydbwysedd rhwng dylunio digidol, argraffu a dylunio symudiadau, gan ymgorffori delweddau’n effeithiol yn eich prosiectau.

Ochr yn ochr â’r technegol, rydym hefyd yn pwysleisio pwysigrwydd ymwybyddiaeth foesegol, ymwybyddiaeth ddiwylliannol ac ymwybyddiaeth hanesyddol ym myd dylunio, gan eich annog i ystyried effaith ehangach eich gwaith. Graphic Design (Full-time) (BA Hons)

Swansea
3 Years Full-time
104-120 UCAS Points

Immerse yourself in the potential of words and images that is central to our creative vision on BA(Hons) Graphic Design.

Graphic design touches our lives with a diversity like no other medium – it guides, instructs, entertains, provokes and influences us as we commute through, consume and consider the world around us. Indeed, it is this timely need for human understanding and questioning that underpins much of our teaching programme.

We embrace the new and celebrate the old – led by the requirements of the challenge at hand, the recognition of our audience and the formulation of an appropriate dialogue with which to transmit the messages of our clients. Digital technology sits happily with inky fingers and tactility, often combining powerfully and sometimes raising philosophical or contextual debate.

Essential principals of typography, format, layout, information navigation and core software skills are embedded in our project challenges, but your unique visual voice and playfulness is of equal importance. Smaller group sizes make for a vibrant dynamic in which each individual student is encouraged to pursue their own path rather than follow the herd.

Essential design principles such as typography, format, layout, information navigation, branding, sustainable packaging, and promotional design, along with core software skills, are embedded in our project challenges; however, your unique visual voice and playfulness are of equal importance. In addition to mastering these creative skills, you will delve into emotive design, ensuring that your work resonates emotionally with the target audience.

Smaller group sizes make for a vibrant dynamic in which each individual student is encouraged to pursue their own path rather than follow the herd. The staff team are design obsessives, and we love to share our passion in a supportive, friendly and lively studio atmosphere. We encourage the development of your verbal communication alongside the visual, producing graduates who can speak confidently about their work, articulate their approach to visual problem-solving and announce their aspirations.

We recognise the critical future focus of our students upon industry and careers. Portfolio building is a key part of your journey, as you gain practical experience through live briefs and professional practice. Workshops, collaborations, and visiting professionals will provide insight into the world of work. You will learn how to navigate the balance between digital design, print, and motion design, incorporating imagery effectively in your projects.

Alongside the technical, we also stress the importance of ethical awareness, cultural awareness, and historical awareness in the world of design, encouraging you to consider the broader impact of your work. Through these experiences, you will develop a solid business understanding and technique understanding, preparing you for real-world design challenges. You will also explore Design and Screen Cultures, reflecting on how visual communication shapes and responds to society. Your destination might add to our extensive list, including Apple, Adidas, Lego, Nike, Pepsi and Sky to name just a few.

  • Assessment is carried out through coursework. There are no exams on this course. Students are formatively assessed throughout a module with summative assessment taking place at the end of a module. A variety of teaching and learning methods are used throughout the course which includes amongst others:

Students are expected to bring their own personal art and design equipment when they commence the course.  We can advise on the correct equipment needed for your studies and signpost appropriate suppliers if you wish to purchase essential items before or during your studies.
